U.S. Ends Extra Passport Pages: What Travelers Need to Know

U.S. passport holders who travel frequently will no longer be able to add extra pages to existing passports beginning this year. The State Department has ended the practice of issuing additional visa pages and now requires travelers who need more space to obtain a new passport.

The option to insert extra pages has been popular among frequent travelers, but the change took effect on Jan. 1. The department announced the policy shift in December, citing security concerns as the primary reason.

For many travelers there is a practical alternative: applicants can request a 52-page passport, which provides twice the number of pages found in the standard 28-page booklet. The larger passport is available when applying for a new passport or when renewing, and the fee is the same as the standard passport.

Several other passport-related developments are taking effect this year. The government has said it will have the authority to withhold passports from individuals who owe significant back taxes to the IRS. In addition, a new mobile application developed in partnership with U.S. Customs and Border Protection—Mobile Passport—lets eligible travelers flying into the United States at participating airports submit passport and flight information in advance to expedite arrival processing.

The elimination of extra-page inserts and the availability of the 52-page passport aim to balance traveler needs with security and administrative considerations. Travelers who frequently travel for business or leisure should consider requesting the larger booklet at renewal or when applying for a passport to avoid interruptions during their trips.

Before planning travel, check passport expiration dates and available page counts to ensure your passport meets destination requirements. If you owe significant federal taxes, be aware that passport issuance or renewal could be affected under the new policy. For those arriving at participating U.S. airports, the Mobile Passport app may offer a faster entry experience by allowing you to submit required information ahead of time.
