Though long regarded as a luxury address, The Ritz-Carlton, Chicago had been due for an update. Over the past year the hotel underwent a multimillion-dollar revitalization, and this summer the full redesign was unveiled to guests and visitors.
The refreshed interiors emphasize a contemporary, refined aesthetic that draws inspiration from Chicago’s architecture and industrial heritage. Throughout the property, design choices and materials reflect the city’s skyline and waterfront influences, with many spaces oriented to showcase sweeping views.
“Every venue and detail embraces the grandeur of Chicago, recapturing our heritage with approachable luxury, landmark service and community soul. The hotel is part of the fabric of the city, and will continue to set the standard for luxury in Chicago. It’s where legacy and vibrancy meet,” said Peter Simoncelli, general manager, The Ritz-Carlton, Chicago.
“The creative redesign takes inspiration from the city, unveiling a true sense of place. Throughout the entire property, we have connected design elements of the building’s historic exterior and brought the inspiration and energy of Chicago inside. As a result, The Ritz-Carlton, Chicago sets the stage for a modern experience in the middle of the skyline,” added Billy Quimby, principal at BAMO, the design firm responsible for the project.
The most notable changes appear in the lobby, ballroom, dining venues and spa. In the lobby, a hand-blown glass sculpture—inspired by Lake Michigan—serves as a central focal point, its qualities changing with the light and time of day. Gray marble columns and metallic partitions define public gathering areas and create a sense of structure and flow.
The ballroom has been expanded and restored to become the largest luxury ballroom in the city, offering 14,000 square feet of event space. A spectacular chandelier featuring approximately 400,000 crystals was carefully restored, and a secondary, smaller ballroom was added to accommodate events of up to 220 guests.
Dining options have also been refreshed. One highlight is Torali, Italian – Steak, a modern Italian steakhouse located on the 12th floor, which includes an adjoining bar and city-facing vistas. The new spa channels the lake’s calming influence through a soothing palette of stone, walnut and serene hues, creating a tranquil retreat within the hotel.
