Marriott Luxury Collection Debuts First Hotel in Tasmania

Marriott International is poised for a busy 2018, with more than 200 hotels in development worldwide and 40 of those joining its luxury brands.

The Luxury Collection Hotels & Resorts has announced the brand’s first hotel in Tasmania, scheduled to open in late 2018 after a comprehensive renovation.

The Tasman, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Hobart, will occupy a group of heritage buildings, including the Georgian-style St. Mary’s Hospital, which dates back to 1847. Positioned on Parliament Square—a design-led urban development aimed at revitalizing the area—The Tasman will be located just behind Hobart’s historic Parliament House and within easy reach of Salamanca Market and the Museum of Old and New Art.

When it opens, The Tasman will feature 128 elegantly appointed guestrooms and suites. The redesign will preserve restored elements such as original windows, timber floorboards and fireplaces. Corridors will display work by local artists, while an upscale restaurant, a lobby lounge and a dedicated whiskey bar will provide a range of dining and social experiences inspired by Tasmanian culture.

“Australia is an extremely desirable destination for The Luxury Collection, and The Tasman is sure to become the place for global explorers to stay while visiting Tasmania,” said Mitzi Gaskins, global brand leader for The Luxury Collection and JW Marriott.

The Luxury Collection includes more than 100 distinctive properties across over 30 countries, each recognized for its individual character and high standards. The arrival of The Tasman adds to Marriott International’s growing presence in the region: the company now operates 26 hotels across eight brands in Australia and the Pacific, with an additional 20 hotels planned.
