Air Canada Adds Premium Economy Seating Across Fleet

Air Canada will introduce a premium-economy cabin on select international routes and expand its low-cost Rouge brand. Starting this summer, five Boeing 777s joining the fleet over the next year will include a dedicated premium-economy section offering larger seats, increased legroom, enhanced meal service, complimentary bar service and priority check-in.

In addition to adding premium-economy, the airline is growing Rouge, its discount carrier. Rouge launches in July with four aircraft and will receive six more planes before the end of the year to support expanded low-cost international and leisure routes. These fleet changes aim to provide passengers with more choice between value-oriented travel and a more comfortable mid-tier experience on long-haul flights.

By fitting selected 777s with premium-economy seating, Air Canada seeks to attract travelers who want better comfort than standard economy without the full cost of business class. The new cabin will be positioned to deliver tangible upgrades—roomier seats, added recline and legroom, improved dining options and priority services—making it easier for customers to travel in greater comfort on transcontinental and international sectors.

Meanwhile, the Rouge expansion reflects a strategic focus on leisure and price-sensitive markets. Increasing the low-cost fleet allows Air Canada to serve more seasonal and point-to-point destinations at competitive fares while keeping its mainline network concentrated on core international corridors and premium customers. Together, the premium-economy rollout and Rouge growth signal a dual approach: enhancing product differentiation on long-haul aircraft while pursuing greater market share in the value travel segment.

These announcements follow a broader industry trend in which carriers balance multiple cabin classes and low-cost subsidiaries to meet varied passenger needs. For travelers, the changes should mean more choices when booking international travel—either a more comfortable, service-enhanced economy option on select 777 flights or lower-cost alternatives through the expanded Rouge network.
