Hong Kong International Airport has introduced a new priority screening service designed to improve the departure experience for premium and special-needs passengers. The initiative offers dedicated security lanes in the departure halls at both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 to reduce wait times and provide a smoother, more comfortable screening process.
A spokesman for the Airport Authority Hong Kong explained, “The HKIA Courtesy Channel will provide dedicated access and a security screening channel in the departure halls at Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 to facilitate passengers with special needs, including those with reduced mobility, pregnant passengers, the elderly, those traveling with infants and others. In addition, the Courtesy Channel service is also available for airlines for their invited passengers.”
The Courtesy Channel is intended primarily to assist travelers who require extra care or convenience. Eligible users include passengers with limited mobility, older travelers, expectant mothers and people traveling with young children. The service is also available to passengers invited by participating airlines, which may include travelers in premium cabins, loyalty program members, or passengers who have purchased additional services; individual airlines determine their own invitation criteria.
At present, the service is in a soft-launch trial phase. All four of Hong Kong’s home carriers are participating in this initial stage: Cathay Pacific, Cathay Dragon, Hong Kong Airlines and HK Express. During the trial, staff will monitor usage, identify operational refinements, and gather feedback from both passengers and airline partners. The Airport Authority plans to expand participation to other airlines in subsequent rollout phases.
The airport has said the full public launch of the HKIA Courtesy Channel is scheduled for September. Between now and the full launch, procedures and staffing will be adjusted as needed to ensure the service operates reliably and meets safety and security requirements. Emphasis will be placed on maintaining efficient passenger flows while offering the additional support these passengers need.
Advantages of a dedicated Courtesy Channel include shorter queuing times for eligible passengers, clearer and more supportive handling of mobility aids and infant equipment, and a calmer environment for passengers who find busy screening areas stressful. For airlines, the channel provides a way to extend complimentary or invited access to customers who might benefit from faster processing through security.
Operational details such as exact eligibility rules, lane locations, signage, and the process for airline invitations may be refined during the trial period. Passengers intending to use the Courtesy Channel should check with their airline or airport customer services for guidance on whether they qualify and how to access the service during their departure.
Overall, the HKIA Courtesy Channel represents an effort by Hong Kong International Airport to make security screening more accessible and passenger-friendly without compromising safety. By offering a dedicated screening option for those who need it most, the airport aims to enhance the travel experience for diverse passenger groups while maintaining efficient operations across its terminals.
