Singapore Airlines to Start Charging for Seat Reservations

Singapore Airlines has introduced a fee for advance seat selection for passengers traveling on the airline’s lowest economy fare.

Beginning Jan. 20, passengers who purchase the Lite economy fare will be required to pay a charge to reserve a seat in advance. The fee starts at $5 per sector and increases for longer flights. This change affects advance seat selection only; it does not alter in-flight services or standard baggage allowances associated with each fare type.

Several exceptions apply, so not every economy passenger will need to pay the new fee. Passengers are exempt from the charge in the following situations:

  • Those who purchase the higher economy fare classes (Standard or Flexi) are not subject to the seat-selection fee.
  • Passengers who complete online check-in within 48 hours of departure will not be charged for seat selection.
  • Certain members of the airline’s frequent flyer program retain complimentary advance seat selection as part of their loyalty benefits.
  • Families traveling with children under 12 years of age are also exempt, ensuring parents can sit with their young children without paying the fee.

This update aligns Singapore Airlines with a broader industry trend of unbundling ancillary services from basic fares, giving travelers the option to pay only for the specific services they want. Passengers who prefer to select seats in advance should review fare rules and fees when booking to determine whether the Lite fare meets their needs or whether upgrading to Standard or Flexi—or using online check-in within 48 hours—would be more cost-effective.

Before booking, travelers may wish to check the most current terms on their ticket confirmation or the airline’s official communications to confirm eligibility for any exemptions or loyalty benefits that waive the seat-selection charge.
