Clipper Plans New Florida–Cuba Ferry Route

If you’ve traveled in the Pacific Northwest, you’ve likely seen the fast, Union Jack‑adorned Clipper ferry operating around Puget Sound. Seattle‑based Clipper Navigation, Inc., which runs passenger ferry services between Vancouver, Victoria and Seattle, has been acquired by the German ferry and shipping operator FRS (Förde Reederei Seetouristik).

FRS plans to expand the Clipper’s operations. The company intends to increase service on the Victoria–Vancouver corridor and is exploring a new route connecting Florida and Cuba, subject to obtaining the necessary government approvals, according to reports in The Seattle Times.

Clipper Navigation currently operates three Victoria Clipper vessels. FRS is a larger operator with a global footprint, running roughly 60 vessels across a dozen countries and carrying millions of passengers annually.

The acquisition signals a push to grow passenger ferry options on the West Coast while leveraging FRS’s broader experience in international ferry services. Expanded Vancouver–Victoria frequency would aim to better serve travelers and commuters between the two British Columbia ports and Victoria’s capital, while potential new routes—if approved—could open additional markets for leisure and regional travel.

Operational changes following the sale may include adjustments to schedules, ticketing options, and onboard amenities, reflecting FRS’s standards and service model. For travelers, any expansion could mean more frequent departures, improved connectivity and potentially new pricing or package options that integrate with FRS’s existing network.

As with any acquisition, regulatory approvals and practical details such as vessel deployment, crewing and port agreements will shape the timeline for service changes. Customers and local stakeholders can expect announcements from Clipper Navigation and FRS as plans firm up and permits are secured.

Until those details are finalized, current Clipper routes and schedules remain in place. Travelers planning trips between Seattle, Vancouver and Victoria should consult official Clipper communications for the latest timetable and booking information.
