Quito Rebuilds: Tourism Infrastructure Expansion After Earthquake

Quito, Ecuador, is steadily recovering from the devastating magnitude 7.8 earthquake in April that claimed nearly 500 lives and injured more than 4,000 people. The city’s tourism infrastructure has already begun to rebound, with several new hotels and development projects advancing its capacity to welcome visitors.

In May, Quito celebrated the opening of the 146-room Wyndham Quito Airport Gran Condor at Mariscal Sucre International Airport. The property offers a restaurant and bar, a pool, a health and fitness spa, and four meeting rooms, catering to both leisure and business travelers.

More hotels are planned for the near future. Within the next two years, the San Patricio Hilton Hotel is expected to open between the airport and the more rural Cumbayá district. Other projects in development include the Eurobuilding Express Hotel, the Royal Green Hotel, and a 130-room Ibis Hotel from the Accor group located at the intersection of Diego de Almagro and Bello Horizonte streets.

Major public infrastructure is also progressing. Quito’s Metropolitan Convention Center is under construction in Bicentennial Park, the site of the city’s former international airport. The complex will span a significant area and is planned to include event venues, hotels, restaurants, shops, and entertainment spaces, expanding Quito’s capacity for large conferences and gatherings.

Quito is preparing to host Habitat III, the United Nations’ global summit on sustainable urban development and housing, scheduled for October. The event is expected to attract around 30,000 international delegates, including heads of state, and will spotlight urban planning and sustainability initiatives.
