Virgin Australia has confirmed Melbourne (MEL) as the launch point for its new service to Hong Kong (HKG), marking the airline’s first-ever route to Hong Kong. This new connection is part of a broader partnership with HNA Aviation, Hong Kong Airlines and HK Express.
The collaboration recently received approval from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, and Virgin Australia is now awaiting final regulatory clearances before ticket sales can begin. Once approved, the service will represent Virgin Australia’s initial expansion into Greater China.
The Melbourne–Hong Kong route is scheduled to start on July 5 and will be operated five times weekly using an Airbus A330-200 aircraft. The frequency and equipment reflect the carrier’s intention to provide a reliable link between Melbourne’s busy international market and Hong Kong’s extensive network across Asia.
John Borghetti, CEO of the Virgin Australia Group, said the move is central to the airline’s international growth plans. He highlighted Greater China as one of Australia’s fastest-growing and most valuable sources of inbound tourism and emphasized Melbourne’s appeal as a major global city that hosts significant cultural and sporting events. The new route is intended to boost inbound visitation to Melbourne from Hong Kong and beyond, showcasing the city’s attractions to a wider audience.
By launching this service, Virgin Australia aims to strengthen connectivity between Australia and Asia, offering more travel options for both business and leisure passengers. The alliance with HNA Aviation, Hong Kong Airlines and HK Express is designed to enhance network reach, coordination and passenger choice across the participating carriers’ combined markets.
Further details about schedules, fares and booking availability will be announced following receipt of the remaining regulatory approvals. Travelers and travel industry observers will be watching for confirmation of launch dates and on-sale timelines as Virgin Australia finalizes operational arrangements.
