To simplify and streamline the boarding process, Etihad Airways has introduced mobile boarding passes for passengers who use its mobile online check-in service. This digital option is designed to make travel more convenient by reducing the need for paper documents and helping to lower the airline’s environmental impact. “The elimination of paper boarding passes will be more convenient for our guests and reduce our environmental footprint, which is good for the guest, the business and for the environment,” said Peter Baumgartner, COO of Etihad Airways.
The mobile boarding pass service is currently available on selected routes and for customers departing from several key airports. Eligible departure points include Abu Dhabi (AUH) — with the exception of flights bound for the United States — as well as London (LHR), Manchester (MAN), Doha (DOH), Colombo (CMB), Dammam (DMM), Dusseldorf (DUS), Frankfurt (FRA), Sao Paulo (GRU), Istanbul (IST), Minsk (MSQ), Munich (MUC) and Tokyo Narita (NRT). Passengers who check in via Etihad’s mobile platform can receive their boarding pass directly on their mobile device, allowing for faster, paperless processing at airport checkpoints.
Using a mobile boarding pass typically involves completing check-in through Etihad’s mobile website or app, choosing seats and entering any required travel details. Once check-in is confirmed, the passenger receives a scannable pass on their phone that can be presented at bag drop, security and the boarding gate. This method reduces the need to print a boarding pass while keeping the same airport procedures intact.
Beyond convenience, the move toward mobile boarding passes is part of a broader industry trend to digitize travel documents and improve sustainability. Fewer printed passes mean less paper waste, and digitized processes can speed up passenger flows at busy terminals. Etihad’s rollout on select routes allows the airline to expand the service gradually while ensuring reliable performance and passenger support.
Passengers planning to use mobile boarding passes should ensure their mobile device is sufficiently charged and that they have access to their boarding pass before reaching the airport. In some cases, passengers may still need to visit a check-in counter or bag drop if they have special requests, oversized baggage, or travel requirements that cannot be handled through mobile check-in. For departures from airports not yet covered by the mobile pass service, traditional printed boarding passes remain available through online, kiosk or counter check-in options.
Etihad continues to refine its digital offerings to enhance the passenger experience, balancing convenience and environmental responsibility with operational reliability. As the airline expands mobile boarding pass availability, travelers can expect a smoother, more modernized journey through participating airports.
