Set between the Allgäu and Ammer mountain ranges, this region has long been a favorite for day trips and hikes. Perched at 4,330 feet, Rohrkopfhütte has been given new life by the Thurm family, long-term managers of the hut and owners of Hotel Das Rübezahl in nearby Schwangau, a roughly 20-minute drive down the mountain. They have carefully renovated and modernized the venue while preserving its traditional Bavarian charm.

Renovations reused portions of the original wood for furnishings and improved bathroom access for greater comfort. The kitchen presents traditional Bavarian dishes with a contemporary twist—examples include bread dumpling carpaccio and pretzel tarte flambée. Special offerings at Rohrkopfhütte include satisfying fondue, cozy hut evenings and a generous mountain breakfast. Open year-round, the hut is available for private events and gatherings, and its food is matched by the unforgettable mountain panoramas.

The landscape around Schwangau is defined by mountains, rivers and lakes. The Thurm family has operated Hotel Das Rübezahl since 1959, and guests staying at the hotel can enjoy its spa and regional Bavarian cuisine. Typical dishes on offer include lentil stew, sausage salad, Bavarian cheese spaetzle, knuckle of ham, venison goulash and apple strudel. Das Rübezahl is an excellent base for year-round activities—winter skiing and summer or autumn hiking —including scenic trails from the hotel up to Rohrkopfhütte.

Typical nightly rates for two people with breakfast begin at approximately $365 in winter and $387 in summer.
