When was the last time you visited tranquil Shelter Island in New York? If it’s been a while, the opening of Léon 1909 provides a perfect reason to return. A short ferry ride from Sag Harbor or Greenport on Long Island brings you to this storied island community. Reserve a table ahead of time to enjoy a menu of rustic French and Italian dishes made with fresh local and regional ingredients.

The restaurant is the vision of father-and-daughter team Robert and Valerie Mnuchin, who wanted to introduce Old-World charm to this seaside spot. Inside, warm lighting, a high-trestle ceiling and weathered leather seating center around a wood-burning hearth and chimney, creating an intimate, welcoming atmosphere. Outside, a terrace with teak tables and cushioned chairs offers comfortable al fresco dining. A private dining room is available for parties up to 16 guests.
The menu opens with appealing starters such as Persian cucumber with feta, red onion and Dijon vinaigrette; house-baked bread served with cultured butter; and grilled flatbread topped with smashed fava beans, carrot, garlic scapes, spring onion and pistachio. Entrées include favorites like strozzapreti pasta tossed with fire-roasted tomato, basil and Pecorino Romano; sea bass a la nage served with English peas, asparagus, garlic chive and Hakurei turnip; and a Léon burger crowned with Gruyère, caramelized onions and sour pickles. Desserts feature bright lemon cream tarts, creamy ricotta cheesecake and indulgent banana splits.
