Top 7 Happiest States in the U.S. and Why They Rank High

  • San Francisco, California, USA

Following the release of the 2019 World Happiness Report, WalletHub produced its own state-by-state ranking of happiness. The United States placed 19th globally, and WalletHub’s analysis looked at environment, well-being and community factors to determine which states report the highest life satisfaction. Below are the seven states that ranked highest overall.
  • Boston, Massachusetts

Massachusetts ranks seventh. The New England state scores well for workplace satisfaction and a favorable work-life balance, with residents working relatively few hours compared with other states. That balance likely contributes to lower suicide rates and overall positive well-being.
  • Idaho

Idaho is sixth, praised for strong community ties and positive workplace environments. Its ranking was held back, however, by higher suicide rates, which affected the state’s overall score.
  • New Jersey

New Jersey ranks fifth. Residents there report low levels of adult depression and one of the lowest suicide rates in the country, contributing to the state’s strong placement on WalletHub’s list.
  • San Francisco, California, USA

California takes fourth place. The state benefits from high adult participation in sports and outdoor activities, which supports physical well-being. California scored lower for regular volunteering, which tempered its overall rank.
  • Minnesota

Minnesota ranks third. The state is known for its abundant natural spaces, especially in summer, and residents report strong emotional and physical health. Minnesota also ranks among the safest states, which likely supports overall life satisfaction.
  • Utah

Utah is second. It posts the lowest separation and divorce rate among the states and a high volunteer rate, along with positive workplace and community environments—factors that help explain its strong ranking.
  • Hawaii, USA

Hawaii tops the list. Its combination of strong social connections, natural beauty, and healthy lifestyles contributes to the highest overall life satisfaction among states in WalletHub’s analysis.
