Flight attendants at Austrian Airlines are receiving a refreshed, stylish uniform that emphasizes the carrier’s signature crimson. The revamped design features tailored silhouettes with subtle retro details, giving the garments a timeless yet modern feel. In the coming weeks, crew members will vote on whether accessories such as red shoes and stockings should be included as part of the official uniform.
The collection was designed by Vienna-born Marina Hoermanseder, who trained in fashion design at ESMOD Berlin and Central Saint Martins in London. Hoermanseder further developed her skills interning with designer Alexander McQueen and launched her first collection at the 2014 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Berlin and at Fashion Scout in London.
The updated uniforms aim to balance practicality and elegance, with cuts and fabrics chosen for comfort during long flights while maintaining a polished, professional appearance. The crimson color acts as a distinctive brand element, ensuring staff are easily identifiable and presenting a cohesive visual identity across the airline’s services.
Beyond aesthetics, attention was paid to functional details: the tailoring supports movement, pockets and closures are designed for ease of use, and fabric choices reflect considerations for wearability and maintenance. The retro-inspired lines are subtle, intended to evoke classic aviation style without compromising contemporary comfort.
As the airline prepares to implement the new wardrobe, the internal vote gives employees a voice in finalizing the look, especially regarding whether footwear and hosiery in the signature red should become standard. This consultative approach highlights the carrier’s effort to involve staff in decisions that affect their daily work experience.
The collaboration with an internationally trained designer underscores the airline’s commitment to quality and brand presentation. By combining professional tailoring, a distinctive color palette and practical design choices, the new uniform aims to enhance the passenger experience through a cohesive and attractive staff appearance.
