How Outrigger Built a High-Impact Recycling Program

Eight Outrigger Hotels and Resorts properties are expanding their sustainability efforts, with the brand’s 2013 eco-friendly initiatives diverting more than 27 tons of recyclable plastic bottles and aluminum cans from guest rooms — an increase of roughly 20 tons over the previous year. That reduction in waste helped save more than 200 cubic yards of landfill space.

Outrigger’s in-room recycling program, introduced in 2006 at its two Waikiki hotels, makes it easy for guests to leave plastic bottles and aluminum cans in designated areas inside guestrooms. Since the program began, participating properties have collected about 107 tons of recyclables, demonstrating a long-term commitment to reducing waste and encouraging responsible travel.

In addition to environmental benefits, the 2013 collection generated more than $27,000 for PACT, a local Hawaii nonprofit that provides social services to families in need. This partnership highlights how hotel recycling programs can deliver both ecological and community support.

The hotels that took part in the 2013 recycling effort include Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach, Outrigger Reef on the Beach, Outrigger Luana Waikiki, OHANA Waikiki East, OHANA Waikiki West, OHANA Waikiki Malia, Embassy Suites–Waikiki Beach Walk and Holiday Inn Waikiki Beachcomber. By rolling the program out across multiple properties, Outrigger increased the scale and impact of its recycling work.

Outrigger’s recycling initiative aligns with broader trends in hospitality toward waste reduction, resource conservation and community engagement. Providing convenient in-room recycling options encourages guest participation, while partnerships with local nonprofits ensure the collected materials contribute value beyond environmental savings.

The continued growth in recyclables collected year over year reflects both operational improvements and rising guest awareness. Hotels that adopt clear, easy-to-use recycling practices typically see higher participation rates, which translates into larger volumes diverted from landfills and stronger contributions to charitable partners.

By combining guest-focused convenience, staff participation and nonprofit collaboration, Outrigger’s program demonstrates a practical model for other hotels aiming to cut waste and support local communities. The program’s measurable outcomes — tons of recyclables collected, landfill space saved and funds raised for social services — offer a clear example of how hospitality operations can integrate sustainability into everyday guest experiences.
