Arrival/Check-in: Boston is my hometown, and the city has changed dramatically since the completion of the Big Dig, which replaced the old elevated central artery with an underground tunnel. Streets and addresses that once sat beneath or beside that overpass are now accessible at ground level. The InterContinental Boston sits at one of these transformed locations. We arrived amid heavy traffic, but the valet was prompt, took our bags from the trunk and sent the car to the parking garage. The check-in desk sits to the right of an open lobby that stretches to the back of the property, offering clear views of the Fort Point Channel. Traveling light with wheelie bags made the process quick and efficient, and we were headed to our room in no time. (30/30)
Guest Quarters: Our room offered wide, floor-to-ceiling views of the renewed Boston and the Fort Point Channel. The InterContinental Boston has been an anchor in the revitalization of this once-overlooked neighborhood. An oversized desk facing the windows provided a well-equipped workspace with ample drawers, cubbyholes and power outlets suitable for business travelers. A settee at the foot of the king bed—also oriented toward the view—made a comfortable spot for reading or watching the flatscreen TV. An armchair with an ottoman added another place to relax. Bedside controls made lighting adjustments easy, and backlit wall panels beside the bed created a pleasant evening atmosphere. The marble bathroom featured a separate tub and shower, a double-sink vanity and generous space for toiletries. (30/30)
Services/Amenities: Although the hotel hosts many meetings, its layout allows leisure guests to find quiet spaces while business visitors work nearby. There is a full-service spa and a fitness center. One small downside: the fitness center sits adjacent to the spa check-in desk, which can slightly diminish the spa’s peaceful entry area. Once inside the spa, however, the environment is focused on relaxation. Dining options are strong: Miel Brasserie Provençale emphasizes Provencal flavors, showcasing regional ingredients such as aromatic herbs, lavender, honey and olive oil. My dining companion and I enjoyed the pan-roasted lobster with chickpeas and truffle, finished with Chateau Virand olive oil. The dining room can pick up noise from the neighboring RumBa, a lively spot featuring Latin and Caribbean rhythms, which occasionally drifts into the restaurant. Across the lobby, Sushi-Teq, a sushi and tequila bar, has become a local favorite; its outdoor patio overlooking the channel adds to its appeal. (37/40)
The Experience: After one stay, the InterContinental Boston rose to the top of my list of favorite hotels in the city.
