Upcoming Changes at Philadelphia International Airport: What to Know

Terminal B at Philadelphia International Airport will undergo a $30 million renovation to modernize the facility and improve the passenger experience. Operated by American Airlines, the terminal renovation—developed in partnership with MarketPlace Philadelphia—will roll out over the next 18 to 24 months and bring a mix of technology upgrades, refreshed interiors and new dining options that reflect the local culinary scene.

The multi-million dollar project focuses on convenience and comfort. Thousands of iPads will be installed across the terminal to let travelers order food, drinks and amenities for delivery to 15 gate lounges, check flight status, browse the web and access entertainment. The redesign also adds more than 1,000 power ports so passengers can easily charge phones, tablets and other devices while waiting for flights.

Dining at Terminal B will be expanded and diversified to suit a range of tastes and budgets. Eight new restaurant concepts will feature menus developed by chefs from well-known Philadelphia establishments, bringing a taste of the city to the airport. Participating chefs and concepts include Laurel, The Fat Ham, Percy Street Barbecue, The Whip Tavern, Le Virtu, Tria and Nomad Pizza, among others. In addition to full-service restaurants, plans call for a large food hall and several gourmet shops to give travelers more choices and faster options for meals on the go.

The terminal’s interior will be refreshed with contemporary design elements that enhance passenger flow and comfort. Work will target public areas and concourses, applying new finishes and layouts that make better use of space and natural movement patterns. The upgrades are intended to reflect Philadelphia’s energy and creativity while improving functionality for daily operations and traveler needs.

“American is proud to offer our customers a taste of local flavors and the convenience of high-tech amenities at our PHL hub. The transformation of Terminal B is the latest in our more than $3 billion investment in improving the travel experience for our customers,” said Cedric Rockamore, vice president, PHL hub operations, American Airlines.

PHL leadership emphasized the partnership with American Airlines as a way to strengthen the airport’s hub role and deliver an upgraded passenger experience. “We want the traveling experience at PHL to reflect the vitality and innovation of our great city and we are very pleased to be expanding these options for our passengers. We are proud to be one of American’s hubs and our partnership will be enhanced and deepened by this redesign of Terminal B,” said Chellie Cameron, CEO, PHL.

Construction and implementation will be phased to minimize disruption to travelers. Over the coming months, passengers can expect a steady stream of visible improvements—new seating and charging stations, refreshed finishes, expanded food and retail choices, and the gradual rollout of digital conveniences like the iPad ordering and entertainment systems. Together, these changes aim to make Terminal B more comfortable, convenient and distinctly Philadelphian for the millions of travelers who pass through each year.
