Astronomy enthusiasts can witness a total solar eclipse by taking an Amtrak train to southern Illinois. The coast-to-coast eclipse on Aug. 21 will be the first of its kind in a century, and train service offers a convenient way to reach prime viewing locations.
Amtrak is offering savings of up to 30 percent on Illini and Saluki service from Aug. 12–22. The moon’s shadow will sweep across the United States at more than 930 mph, moving from Oregon to South Carolina. In Illinois, the longest duration of totality is expected near Carbondale, where observers could experience about two minutes and 38 seconds of darkness.
Visitors aiming to view the eclipse from the best vantage points should plan to arrive at their chosen site no later than 12 p.m. local time. As a sponsor of related events, Amtrak’s logo will appear on viewing glasses distributed by Carbondale Tourism at the Eclipse Marketplace.
Amtrak will permit bicycles on board for travelers biking from stations to nearby viewing areas; however, bicycle space is limited and subject to availability. Riders from neighboring states such as Kentucky, Tennessee and Louisiana have multiple Amtrak routing options to reach southern Illinois.
Discounted adult fares on the Illini and Saluki between Chicago and Carbondale are being offered at $24 each way. Travelers bringing a bicycle should expect an additional $10 fee each way for bike transport.
