Welcome to the 11th Leisure Lifestyle Awards, our annual survey celebrating the best in leisure and lifestyle travel. Each year we recognize outstanding goods, services, destinations, hotels, airlines, airports, cruises and more. Below are this year’s winners—congratulations to each honoree for their excellence in leisure travel.
We begin with our destination winners: exceptional cities, islands and towns around the globe that deliver memorable leisure experiences. Greece earns Best Historical Attractions, International, while Savannah, Georgia, takes Best Historical Attractions, Domestic—both repeat winners. For adventure travel, Thailand is named Best Adventure Destination, International, and Asheville, North Carolina, is Best Adventure Destination, Domestic.

The Cayman Islands claim the top spot for Best Beaches. The Dominican Republic is a three-time winner for Best Caribbean Island. Santoríni holds Best Island in Europe for the 10th consecutive year and is inducted into our Hall of Fame for that streak. Tahiti unseats a long-time leader to become Best Island in the Pacific Rim, and Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, earns its third Best Island in the United States title.
For winter sports enthusiasts, Telluride, Colorado, is Best North American Ski Destination for the fifth straight year, while Whistler, British Columbia, is Best International Ski Destination. Telluride’s fifth consecutive win grants it Quint Status. In golf, Streamsong Resort is a two-time Best Golf Destination.

Also topping our lists are several standout leisure destinations: Nashville, Tennessee, named Best Leisure Destination in the United States; South Africa, Best Leisure Destination in Africa; İstanbul, Türkiye, Best Leisure Destination in Europe for the second year in a row; Panama City, Panama, Best Leisure Destination in Latin/South America for the second consecutive year; Los Cabos, Best Leisure Destination in Mexico for the second straight year; and Dubrovnik, Croatia, Best Leisure Destination for Groups. Seoul, South Korea, registers its first win as Best Leisure Destination in Asia.
Savannah, Georgia, and Dublin, Ireland, return to the winners’ list as Best Weekend Destination in North America (four years running) and Best Weekend Destination in the World (second consecutive year), respectively.
Turning to cruise lines, Royal Caribbean is honored as Best Family Cruise Line, while Seabourn Cruise Line earns Best Luxury Cruise Line. Virgin Voyages is recognized for Best Cruise Line Suites for its Mega Rockstar Quarters.
Viking Expeditions wins Best Adventure Cruise Line and also appears as Best Expedition Cruises; Viking Ocean Cruises is Best Large-Ship Cruise Line. Paul Gauguin Cruises secures its eighth straight award as Best Small-Ship Cruise Line. Princess Cruises earns recognition for Best Cruise Ship Excursions (its eighth win) and Best Cruise Line Entertainment (fifth win). Seabourn receives its fifth win as Best Cruise Line Spas and joins Quint Status honorees. Cunard is recognized both as Best Cruise Line to Alaska and Best World Cruise.

Additional cruise honors include AmaWaterways as Best River Cruise Line; Azamara for Best Cruise Line Dining; Oceania Cruises for Best Cruise Line Rewards Program; and Windstar Cruises for Best Cruise Line Caribbean Sailings, repeating as winner. Port of Miami earns Best Cruise Port.
In hotels, Meliá Hotels International returns as Best Luxury Leisure Hotel Group in the World after a one-year break and also wins Best Hotel Chain in the Caribbean. Other hotel honors include Marriott Hotels & Resorts as Best Hotel Chain Resorts and Best Family Resort Chain; Six Senses as Best Hotel Chain in Thailand and Best Eco-Friendly Hotel Chain; Westin Hotels & Resorts as Best Pet-Friendly Hotels; and Paradisus Resorts as Best All-Inclusive Resorts.
Leisure travel involves many moving parts. Here are the remaining honorees across airports, airlines, credit cards, tour operators and lifestyle brands.
Airports recognized include Istanbul Grand Airport as Best Airport for Layovers (second consecutive year) and Orlando International Airport as Best Airport for Recreation.

TAP Air Portugal secures Quint Status with its fifth win for Best Stopover Program. Air Canada also achieves five-time wins for Best Airline for Onboard Entertainment and Best Premium Economy Class, and it takes Best Airline Onboard Menu in business class for the fourth consecutive year. United Airlines is named Best Eco-Friendly Airline, and Air Tahiti Nui is honored as Best Leisure Airline.
We introduced several credit card categories this year to spotlight cards that help leisure travelers earn rewards. Inaugural winners include the Aeroplan Credit Card from Chase as Best Leisure Credit Card; United MileagePlus Quest Card from Chase as Best Airline Affinity Credit Card for Leisure; Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Card from Chase as Best Hotel Affinity Credit Card for Leisure; and Norwegian Cruise Line Mastercard as Best Cruise Line Credit Card.

Other winners include Abercrombie & Kent as Best Tour Operator (two years running); BMW as Best Luxury Vehicle; Cartier as Favorite Luxury Watch Brand; Hertz as six-time Best Leisure Car Rental; Na Hoku as Best Vacation Jewelry for the fourth consecutive year; and Maker’s Mark as Favorite Liquor Brand.

THE PROCESS
Global Traveler conducted a reader survey from Dec. 6, 2022, through April 1, 2023. Respondents answered open-ended questions covering the best in leisure, luxury and lifestyle travel. The survey appeared in the magazine and as an insert to subscriber copies, was distributed via direct mail and email, and was available online. Only questionnaires with more than 50 percent of questions completed were counted; partial responses below that threshold were discarded. Employees of the magazine and people associated with the travel industry were not eligible to participate.
CRUISE LINE OF THE YEAR
Global Traveler names AmaWaterways as Cruise Line of the Year. Finalists were compiled by the magazine, and the winner was selected by our Globility Board, a vetted panel of well-traveled subscribers.
AmaWaterways earned the honor for many reasons, including its family-owned approach, two decades of high-end river cruising, attentive service and a broad global footprint that includes Europe, Asia, Africa and South America. The line offers special-interest sailings, professionally guided excursions, immersive shore experiences, wellness programming and award-winning dining, along with pre- and post-cruise options and flexible booking.
The brand also emphasizes health, safety and sustainability—18 of its ships have earned Green Award certification.
SPECIAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS
Each year, Global Traveler recognizes travel companies that excel in innovation, environmental initiatives and community outreach. This year’s Special Achievement Award winners are listed below.

Delta Air Lines receives two Special Achievement Awards: Outstanding Social Responsibility and Outstanding Innovations. Delta’s social responsibility efforts include initiatives to combat human trafficking, such as a $2.5 million donation to an anti-trafficking organization, an apprenticeship program to create jobs for survivors, employee training to spot trafficking, and related programs. Its innovations include major airport investments and customer-experience projects designed to streamline and personalize travel.
Princess Cruises wins Outstanding Customized Services for the Ocean Medallion wearable and its Ocean Compass portal, which personalize and simplify the onboard experience. Viking earns Outstanding Environmental Initiatives for launching a hydrogen-powered vessel designed to reduce carbon emissions and for plans to expand that technology across its fleet.
