Wine & Spirits Guide: Types, Tasting Tips, and Pairings

Wine nurtures the spirit at Abadía Retuerta LeDomaine. Founded in 1146 and carefully renovated in 2012, this exclusive abbey hotel and winery in Spain’s Duero wine region is converting the estate’s former stables into a center for holistic healing and wellness.

Opening in summer 2015, the 10,000-square-foot El Santuario will offer vinotherapy-focused treatments overseen by the spa industry’s first spa sommelier.

The spa sommelier will create personalized vinotherapy plans after assessing each guest through a sensory ritual that includes smelling selected oils and tasting a variety of wines or other beverages. These impressions guide the selection of treatments and products tailored to individual needs.

“We are breaking new ground in personalization with the introduction of a Spa Sommelier and treatment programs based on a blind tasting ritual,” said Andres Araya, managing director.

El Santuario aims to combine traditional wellness therapies with the restorative properties of vineyard-derived ingredients. Treatments will draw on grape-based elements such as pomace, grape seed oil, and must, which are valued for their antioxidant and moisturizing qualities. The intention is to blend spa science with the region’s winemaking heritage, creating sensory experiences that reflect the estate’s unique terroir.

The facility’s design respects the abbey’s historical character while offering modern comforts and treatment spaces. Natural materials and calming finishes will create a serene environment for massages, wraps, and rituals that integrate vinotherapy techniques with established spa modalities. Guests can expect programs that address relaxation, skin rejuvenation, and overall wellbeing.

In addition to individualized treatments, El Santuario is expected to provide curated wellness programs that pair spa sessions with the estate’s wine-tasting experiences and culinary offerings. This integrated approach encourages guests to engage all senses—taste, smell, touch, and sight—enhancing the therapeutic benefits of each visit.

Abadía Retuerta LeDomaine’s project reflects a growing interest in destination spas that celebrate local culture and natural resources. By marrying the art of winemaking with contemporary spa practices, the new sanctuary aims to offer visitors a distinctive path to relaxation and renewal rooted in the Duero valley’s vinicultural tradition.
