The Chanler at Cliff Walk Reveals Newly Renovated Lobby and Guest Suites

The Chanler at Cliff Walk recently unveiled a reimagined lobby and refreshed guest spaces, continuing a multiyear collaboration between Proprietress Lani Shufelt and architecture firm Studio Valerius. This update follows the 2025 opening of the hotel’s signature restaurant, Remy’s Loose, and reflects a careful, thoughtful evolution of the historic mansion.

“The Chanler at Cliff Walk has always been an estate guided by intention,” said Shufelt. “This next chapter continues that legacy, honoring the character and history of the mansion while allowing it to evolve naturally over time. The experience we have set out to create is one entirely its own—something that can’t be replicated or felt anywhere else—where every detail has been meticulously crafted with care, reflective of The Chanler’s distinct rhythm yet shaped by a global perspective. The result is a house that feels both renewed and unmistakably The Chanler.”

The redesign celebrates the property’s coastal setting and layered history through a whimsical yet sophisticated aesthetic. Sculptural elements reference the motion of the Atlantic while varied textures, custom millwork and a curated color palette create spaces that feel both intimate and dramatic.

The lobby’s centerpiece is a scalloped white oak reception desk detailed with hammered brass pinstripes and onyx accents. An illuminated brass display showcases the hotel’s 20 room keys, while a grand fireplace finished in plum and blush glazed tiles anchors the space. Furnishings by designer Kouros Maghsoudi are paired with a coastal-inspired textured plaster relief by artist Esteban Monsalve. Bronze mirror panels and seagrass wallcoverings from Phillip Jeffries, custom carpets by Paris-based artist Marguerite Le Maire, and distinctive lighting complete the composition.

Corridors on the second and third floors are designed as a progressive sensory journey of color, material and light. Guests ascending the stairs encounter a custom blush pink ceramic newel-post light, raffia-textured wall coverings, blush pink-striped grasscloth and seaweed-inspired rugs—details that reinforce the property’s coastal narrative while offering subtle, luxurious moments at every turn.

The renovation also includes updated ground-floor guest bathrooms, extending the same attention to materiality and craft throughout the public areas. Across the refreshed spaces, the design balances historic character with contemporary interventions that feel authentic to the mansion’s spirit.

Altogether, the updates reinforce The Chanler’s identity as a singular, thoughtfully curated destination. By blending regional references with handmade finishes and global influences, the team has created interiors that are unmistakably rooted in place while offering a renewed, refined guest experience.
