Bethesda Fountain crowns a central gathering place in the park. The fountain features the Angel of the Waters, a statue inspired by the angel in the Gospel of John who blessed the Pool of Bethesda. The sculpture also celebrates the arrival of a reliable fresh water supply to New York City in the mid-19th century. Notably, it is the only statue in Central Park that was specially commissioned, making it both historically and artistically significant.
