Castle of Good Hope, Cape Town, South Africa
The Castle of Good Hope is South Africa’s oldest surviving colonial building and a relic of Dutch occupation. During its long history the fort functioned as an administration center and military stronghold, and also as a site for imprisonment and punishment. Accounts of harsh conditions in the dungeons, incidents of flooding that led to prisoners’ deaths, and the many executions carried out there contribute to its reputation as a haunted place. Visitors and staff have reported unexplained sounds and shadowy figures within its historic walls.
