On the Ground: I was especially excited to fly United’s Boeing 787 Dreamliner for the first time. For this trip I departed Los Angeles early and arrived at Denver International Airport a few hours before my noon flight to Tokyo. I spent that time in the United Club lounge, conveniently located in the center of the terminal. The lounge had a full-service counter to assist MileagePlus Premier members, which was useful after I misplaced my connecting flight ticket. The space felt bright and open; seating was plentiful and many chairs included power outlets, perfect for charging devices. Breakfast offerings were simple but the coffee was strong. Earlier that morning the previously scheduled 787 experienced service issues, which created a larger-than-usual crowd seeking seats on my flight. Despite the disruption, gate agents remained composed and worked steadily to rebook and accommodate passengers.
Pre-Flight: BusinessFirst passengers boarded first. I was quickly shown to my window seat and offered a pre-flight beverage. We remained at the gate more than an hour while the airline resolved issues carried over from the earlier flight, which raised concerns about my connections in Japan. I used the delay to take in the Dreamliner’s cabin innovations: notably larger windows with electronic tint control, adjustable mood lighting, and increased cabin height that created a more open feel.
In-Flight: United’s BusinessFirst cabin on the 787 uses a 2-2-2 layout with the outer seats oriented toward the windows, which enhances privacy and sightlines. My second-row seat converted to a fully flat 180-degree bed and included intuitive, constantly illuminated controls that made adjustments easy even in the dark. The inflight entertainment system featured a personal 15-inch screen with current American films and an extensive music library spanning many genres. I took advantage of the selection to listen to a new album and watch a film during the flight. United’s blue-and-gray color scheme felt understated and comfortable throughout the cabin.
Meal service began a few hours after takeoff. Although the Japanese-style entrée had already run out, the starter of sushi and the grilled salmon topped with lump crab were flavorful and well prepared. The Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc complemented the fish nicely. Dessert was a memorable highlight: individually prepared ice cream sundaes. I opted for Bailey’s liqueur and extra caramel over vanilla ice cream, which satisfied my sweet tooth perfectly.
After dinner I prepared for sleep and used the amenity kit, which included products from the brand Philosophy. Chapstick, hand lotion and facial wipes kept me comfortable during the night. The 787’s cabin lighting simulated dawn to gently wake passengers, a pleasant and subtle way to transition to morning before a light breakfast.
The Experience: The flight attendants on this United service were among the friendliest and most professional I’ve experienced on a U.S.-based carrier: attentive, respectful, and efficient without being intrusive. I also enjoyed access to United Club lounges at both ends of the journey. United’s attention to the 787 and its onboard product makes this aircraft a noteworthy option for travelers; it’s a standout experience for anyone interested in modern long-haul travel.
