United Airlines has launched non-stop service between San Francisco (SFO) and Auckland (AKL), marking the start of a new joint venture with Air New Zealand. This partnership is designed to improve trans-Pacific schedules and give travelers more options and greater convenience when flying between the United States and New Zealand.
According to Jim Compton, United’s vice chairman and chief revenue officer, the alliance enables both carriers to optimize connections and offer customers seamless travel throughout the South Pacific. The collaboration gives travelers new ways to reach New Zealand and onward destinations across the region.
Air New Zealand’s chief sales and commercial officer, Cam Wallace, highlighted New Zealand’s appeal to American visitors and said the closer relationship with United should encourage even more tourists to experience what the country offers.
The inaugural United flight also partnered with the Asia and Pacific Initiative to Reduce Emissions to highlight environmental improvements. United used a Boeing 787-8 for the inaugural service; the 787 is constructed with lightweight composite materials and advanced aerodynamics, helping it fly farther and more efficiently. The partnership included optimized flight paths, selective reroutes to improve fuel efficiency, and expedited taxi procedures on arrival to reduce emissions further.
United’s SFO–Auckland schedule operates three times weekly. Departures from San Francisco leave at 10:45 p.m. and arrive in Auckland at 6:55 a.m. two days later, with flight times of about 13 hours. Return flights depart Auckland at 1:20 p.m. and arrive in San Francisco at 6:40 a.m. the same day.
Under the joint venture, Air New Zealand also serves the same route with daily flights. Air New Zealand departs San Francisco at 9:45 p.m., arriving in Auckland at 5:35 a.m. two days later. The return service leaves Auckland at 7:45 p.m. and arrives in San Francisco at 12:45 p.m. on the same day.
