When planning a trip, many travelers forget to arrange transportation from the airport to their accommodation. The simplest solution—joining a taxi queue and paying a steep fare—often requires the least planning but can be costly. Before your next journey, consider the findings of a new study that compares average taxi fares in 80 international cities so you can choose the most economical or convenient option.
Carspring’s 2017 Taxi Price Index reports typical one-way taxi prices from each city’s main airport to its downtown area, along with the most common vehicle model used and whether ride-hailing services such as Uber are available. At the top of the list is Tokyo, where the average taxi fare for a trip from the airport to the city center is $189.91, typically in a Toyota Crown Comfort. Milan and Oslo follow, with one-way fares of $101.62 and $86.51, respectively. Among U.S. cities included in the study, New York City is the most expensive, with an average fare of $71.18 in a Ford Crown Victoria.
The most affordable cities in the study include Cairo, Egypt; Mumbai, India; and Tunis, Tunisia, where typical fares are $4.20, $4.44 and $4.49 respectively. For travelers in the United States, Chicago is the least expensive city on the list, with an average airport-to-city fare of $42.47.
These figures highlight how much taxi costs can vary around the world. When planning airport transfers, consider alternatives such as public transit, airport shuttles, pre-booked private transfers, or ride-hailing apps where available. Booking ahead can often reduce stress and sometimes save money compared with simply taking a taxi on arrival.
Keep in mind that airport taxi fares can be influenced by factors like distance to the city center, local labor and fuel costs, airport surcharges, and vehicle type. Cities with long distances between airports and downtown areas or with higher operating costs tend to have the highest fares, while cities with compact layouts and lower costs typically offer cheaper rides.
Before you travel, check recent local information because rates and ride options can change. Comparing estimated costs for taxis, public transit, and ride-hailing services will help you choose the best transfer method for your budget and schedule.
