Stay at The Prince George Hotel: Luxury Boutique Hotel in Vancouver

Arrival/Check-In: Located on a central block in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the Prince George Hotel is a contemporary red-brick building furnished in a classic style with mahogany tables and traditional carpets. Even though I arrived at 2:45 a.m., the 24-hour front desk was efficient and promptly checked me in, assigning a roomy Crown Floor guestroom on the sixth floor. The staff answered my questions about parking and wake-up calls, and a doorman escorted me through the parking lot and across the street to pick up a slice of pizza before breakfast.

Guest Quarters: The room was decorated in warm neutrals—beige tones with reddish-brown and caramel-striped taffeta curtains—and complemented by more mahogany furniture. It felt very comfortable and practical. A six-foot console housed the television and included six roomy drawers for unpacking, plus ample counter space for organizing papers. The room offered both uptown and downtown views; the windows are fixed and do not open. The bathroom featured generous shelving and a wall-to-wall marble vanity, and the shower was a double-sized walk-in rather than a bathtub. Aveda Rosemary Mint toiletries are provided. Crown Floor guests can enjoy a continental breakfast each morning served from a cart offering coffee, juices and croissants, and a coffee-and-tea station is set up daily by the elevators.

Services/Amenities: On the lobby floor a business center provides 24-hour access to computers and a printer. The fitness center is open from early morning until late evening (5 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.) and includes exercise bicycles, a weight bench and a treadmill; it leads down to a pool that opens onto a grassy, enclosed outdoor patio. The Terrace dining room offers seasonal open-air seating and an extensive breakfast buffet with made-to-order omelets. Adjacent to the Terrace, the Gio Restaurant serves lunch and dinner in a room with distinctive horseshoe banquettes running alongside a long marble bar and a display of colorful glass art on the wall. One popular entrée on the menu is halibut with a bread-and-anchovy crust.

The Experience: For travelers who prioritize location, the Prince George is hard to beat. Perched midway up the hill between the harbor and the Citadel, the hotel places guests within easy reach of downtown attractions. It is a convenient choice for those attending events at the Metro Centre across the street, and its lower floors and parking garage connect to the Downtown Halifax Link network of interconnecting indoor pathways. From the hotel you can walk all the way to the harbor—and the harborside casino—without stepping outdoors.
