Start the Holiday Season in Newport, Rhode Island: Top Events & Activities

Bowen’s Wharf in Newport, Rhode Island, kicks off the holiday season with a lively, family-friendly lineup across Thanksgiving weekend and the following weekend.

On Black Friday, Bowen’s Wharf shops and restaurants welcome visitors, with several retailers donating a portion of their proceeds to local nonprofits and community organizations. As evening falls, the waterfront comes alive with an illuminated holiday boat parade that draws families and visitors to the harbor.

Throughout Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 1–2, shops open early for the Newport Holiday Stroll, offering seasonal shopping and special in-store promotions. On Dec. 1, Bowen’s Wharf holds its 48th annual Christmas tree lighting. The celebration features live music, costumed children’s characters, and other entertainment leading up to the arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus. The 30-foot tree will be lit at 6 p.m., and unless adverse weather intervenes, children will have the opportunity to meet and speak with Santa.

During the festivities, many Bowen’s Wharf merchants and eateries serve hot beverages, baked goods, and other holiday treats, while restaurants offer special menus and seatings—reservations are recommended to secure dining during high-traffic times.

Admission to all events is free, and parking is available on site except during the Christmas tree lighting ceremony, when restrictions may apply to accommodate the crowd and ensure safety.

Whether you’re shopping for gifts, enjoying seasonal food and drink, or taking in the harbor lights and live entertainment, Bowen’s Wharf provides a welcoming, festive waterfront experience for families and visitors of all ages.
