St. Kitts Accelerates Green Initiatives Ahead of Earth Day

Just one year after construction began, and timed for Earth Day, the first phase of St. Kitts’ 20-acre agro-tourism farm — a 16,956-square-foot greenhouse — has been completed. Phase II, which includes a visitor and activity center along with a teahouse, is currently under construction. Built on the grounds of a former sugar plantation, the farm is projected to be finished in 2014.

The Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis is also developing a 1-megawatt solar array near the control tower at Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport (SKB). When operational, the solar installation will supply power to the St. Christopher Air, Sea and Ports Authority and support the island’s broader renewable energy efforts.

“These two projects reflect St. Kitts’ commitment to sustainable tourism,” said Sen. Ricky Skerritt, minister of Tourism & International Transport, Trade, Industry, Commerce & Consumer Affairs. “As we continue to grow our tourism sector, it is vital that we prioritize environmental stewardship so both visitors and residents can continue to enjoy the island’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.”
