Sofitel New York has announced a major refurbishment timed to the Sofitel brand’s 60th anniversary. The renovation, scheduled to begin in late 2024, will touch every part of the Manhattan property: all 398 guestrooms and suites, the lobby, meeting spaces, elevators and corridors. The hotel expects to complete the public areas by fall 2025.

Maud Bailly, CEO of Sofitel, MGallery and Emblems, said the renovation marks a new chapter for the brand on its milestone year. She highlighted that about 20% of Sofitel’s global portfolio is currently being renovated or has committed plans, naming properties such as Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam and Sofitel Sydney Wentworth. Bailly noted that this year the group will open five new Sofitel hotels and has announced recent additions including Sofitel Jaipur Jawahar Circle and Sofitel Legend The Mozart Prague. Backed by a pipeline of 30 hotels expected to open by 2027, Sofitel aims to extend its signature French influence, particularly across North America where it currently operates six properties. She also reiterated the brand’s sustainability and inclusion commitments: pursuing eco-certification across its portfolio by 2025 and increasing the share of female general managers to over 30% by the end of 2025.
The existing design at Sofitel New York blends Parisian Art Deco with 1940s Manhattan. The refurbishment will retain that core concept while refining it, emphasizing a dialogue between contemporary lines and timeless elegance. The updated palette will lean on black, gray, white and gold, complemented by bold artwork and metallic details to elevate the guest experience.

Dieter Schmitz, who recently joined as general manager, will lead the property through the transformation. He expressed enthusiasm about returning to New York City and managing the hotel during this pivotal moment.
“I am excited to be back in New York City at such an important time for Sofitel New York,” Schmitz said. “With its prime location and the upcoming renovation, we will reintroduce the property as a future flagship. Our team is dedicated to delivering exceptional, personalized service, and to ensuring Sofitel New York continues to be an iconic destination in the heart of the city.”
