Etihad Airways has introduced a comprehensive sleep program designed to combat sleep deprivation on long-haul flights and reduce its negative effects. Developed over nearly two years in partnership with the American Centre for Psychiatry and Neurology in Abu Dhabi, the initiative draws on aviation sleep expertise to improve in-flight rest and wellbeing.
In collaboration with a panel of ACPN sleep specialists experienced in aviation health, Etihad built a sensory-focused program addressing the five senses—touch, aroma, sight, taste and sound—to create a more restful cabin environment.
The sleep-enhancement offerings for each sense include:
- Touch: Heather grey sleepsuits and custom COCO-MAT sustainable mattresses to increase physical comfort for sleeping passengers.
- Aroma: A bespoke pillow mist, pulse point oil and a choice of Bergamote 22 toiletries by Le Labo to support relaxation and sleep preparedness.
- Sight: Advanced mood-lighting systems across all cabins designed to help regulate circadian rhythms and promote rest.
- Taste: A dedicated sleep-time beverage service featuring soothing options such as hot chocolate and a selection of herbal teas.
- Sound: Noise-cancelling headphones to reduce ambient cabin noise and aid concentration and sleep.
“A good night’s sleep is scientifically proven to benefit one’s health and nowhere is this more important than on a long-haul flight,” said Peter Baumgartner, Chief Commercial Officer at Etihad Airways.
He added that the airline recognises sleep as a central requirement for passengers and is committed to enhancing comfort and wellbeing aboard its flights. The collaboration with ACPN experts enables Etihad to refine the cabin environment and make targeted investments in on-board services that deliver clear customer benefits.
