EuroBonus, the loyalty program of Scandinavian Airlines, launched in 1992 and is introducing several enhancements designed from detailed analyses of the Scandinavian travel market and member feedback.
Key updates include:
- Introduction of a new top-tier status, EuroBonus Diamond, for the airline’s highest-mileage travelers
- Expanded Gold member benefits, including greater availability of award trips
- Lowering the Silver membership qualification to five roundtrips
- Seasonal Silver access to airport lounges and Fast Track during peak travel periods such as summer and the Christmas holidays
- A new app feature that enables EuroBonus members to call and text one another directly
Stefan Larsson, general manager of SAS in the United States, described the changes as a significant step for the airline. He noted that while points have traditionally been the primary reward, the updated program emphasizes reciprocal loyalty from SAS through meaningful, practical benefits. Members should experience clear added value at every stage of their journey — before, during and after travel.
The adjustments aim to better match member needs and travel patterns across Scandinavia by delivering more usable benefits and easier access to rewards. Introducing the Diamond tier recognizes the airline’s most frequent flyers with exclusive privileges, while the enhancements for Gold and the reduced threshold for Silver make higher service levels more attainable for many travelers.
Seasonal lounge and Fast Track access for Silver members responds to peak-period demand, helping to reduce airport stress during busy travel windows. Increased award availability for Gold members improves the ability to redeem points for actual travel, addressing a common frustration among frequent flyers.
The new in-app communication feature is intended to strengthen the EuroBonus community by letting members contact each other directly, simplifying coordination for group travel or sharing travel tips and updates.
Overall, the changes reflect SAS’s intent to transform EuroBonus from a points-centric program into one delivering tangible, time-sensitive benefits that enhance the customer experience and reward long-term loyalty in practical ways.
