Salt Lake City, aiming to strengthen its position as a leading MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) destination, has announced a major redevelopment initiative centered on modernizing the city’s airport. Alongside this effort, plans call for construction to begin later this year on a new convention hotel to support growing event and tourism demand.
The centerpiece of the project is a $3.6 billion transformation of Salt Lake City International Airport. A complete rebuild of the airport will provide travelers with a modern facility designed to handle rising passenger volumes and improve the overall travel experience.
This redevelopment responds to the airport’s rapid growth and the limitations of older infrastructure. By replacing outdated terminals and facilities with a new, larger terminal complex, the airport will be better equipped to manage current and future traffic while reducing congestion and delays.
Design priorities for the new terminal emphasize sustainability, operational efficiency, and passenger convenience. Features will include flexible spaces that can adapt to changing travel patterns, streamlined circulation to simplify connections, and systems that reduce the airport’s environmental footprint.
To minimize disruption as the new facilities come online, the project will be executed in phases. Staged construction will allow parts of the airport to remain operational while new sections open, ensuring continuity of service for travelers and airlines.
Completion of the new terminal is slated for 2020, when the upgraded airport will begin serving passengers from the modernized facility. Together with the planned convention hotel, these investments aim to support Salt Lake City’s growth as a competitive convention and tourism hub by enhancing capacity, improving visitor experience, and promoting sustainable development.
