Rosewood Hotel & Resorts has announced its newest property, Kona Village, A Rosewood Resort, scheduled to open in 2022. The site, formerly known as Kona Village Resort, has been closed for eight years and will undergo extensive renovations. Located on the Kona Coast of the Island of Hawai‘i, the resort occupies 81 acres of oceanfront land.
The redevelopment plan envisions 150 stand-alone guest hales, each designed with locally inspired décor to reflect Hawaiian traditions and craftsmanship. Two historic venues, the Shipwreck Bar and the Talk Story Bar, are planned to reopen and will offer elevated yet relaxed food and beverage experiences that honor the resort’s legacy.
New amenities will include a full-service spa, a modern fitness center, multiple swimming pools, and tennis courts, creating a comprehensive leisure and wellness environment for guests. The property will blend contemporary comforts with elements that celebrate the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the island.
Sonia Cheng, CEO of Rosewood Hotel Group, commented on the project: “We are honored to bring Rosewood’s A Sense of Place philosophy to such a hallowed resort in the most stunning of destinations. Kona Village’s illustrious history and vibrant culture provide the perfect backdrop for Rosewood’s first property in the Hawaiian Islands. This is a defining development, not only for Rosewood Hotels & Resorts, but also for Hawai‘i.”
The restoration emphasizes sensitivity to local character, incorporating design details, materials, and programming that draw from the region’s history and community. Guests can expect a refined hospitality experience that foregrounds authentic island culture while providing modern luxury amenities.
By restoring and reimagining the former Kona Village Resort, the project aims to revive a treasured destination on the Big Island, offering both longtime visitors and new guests an opportunity to engage with the area’s natural landscape, cultural stories, and coastal setting in fresh and meaningful ways.
