Arrival/Check-in: I arrived at the Ritz-Carlton to a warm, coordinated welcome — a half-dozen staff chimed “Welcome Mr. Pettersens” between the car and the front desk. They clearly knew I was coming. I was tired after a weeklong, physically demanding cruise in Patagonia, and the hotel’s lavish holiday decorations in the airy lobby felt surprising given the 85-degree weather outside. Check-in was efficient, refreshing drinks were offered, and staff promptly showed me the room and explained the amenities. (30/30)
Guest Quarters: I didn’t get one of the coveted north- or west-facing rooms with Andes views; instead my windows looked onto a construction site that began noisy work at 8 a.m. on Monday. My 430-square-foot deluxe room was tastefully appointed, though the decor could have been interchangeable with many luxury hotels. The triple-sheeted bed with seven pillows was irresistibly comfortable, though sleepers who prefer a firmer surface might be less impressed. The marble bathroom, with separate shower and tub, was generously stocked with toiletries. Aside from the nearby construction, some interior soundproofing shortcomings were apparent — I could hear ringing phones and hallway conversations at times. (27/30)
Services/Amenities: The top-floor spa, fitness center, pool and whirlpool sit beneath a graceful glass cupola, offering glimpses of the surrounding mountains and city skyline framed by palm trees and columns. An uncovered sun deck occupies space on the north side. The spa menu includes six massage options, and the in-room Bath Butler Service features a notable wine bath, complete with a glass of Chilean Carménère. Dining options include two standout on-site restaurants, Adrá and Wine 365, which highlight Chile’s wines and local seafood. The elegant lounge and bar offer complimentary WiFi and an inventive menu that includes surprising items like a substantial tuna steak sandwich. Live jazz performances begin Monday through Saturday at 8 p.m. The hotel also offers extensive event facilities, with 17,500 square feet of meeting and conference space on the lower level. (39/40)
The Experience: Since opening in July 2003, the Ritz-Carlton has established itself as Santiago’s premier hotel. Staff consistently addressed me by name throughout my stay, which lent a personalized touch. Service was exemplary, at times bordering on overly attentive — for example, while I briefly dozed on a sun bed, a staff member tidied my robe and inadvertently took my room key. Minor complaints aside, the Ritz-Carlton delivers a highly enjoyable stay, combining award-worthy service with a value that’s impressive for a five-star property. The overall impression is of refined luxury and dependable hospitality.
