Fort Lauderdale Marriott Pompano Beach Resort & Spa is marking the sinking of the 324-foot tanker Lady Luck with a special celebration. The vessel, originally registered in New York City, will be scuttled about a mile offshore to become a faux underwater casino and a new addition to South Florida’s artificial reef system, drawing divers and marine enthusiasts from around the globe.
Marriott is organizing two events to support the project. The first, a live auction on July 8, will feature Pompano Beach’s mayor as the auctioneer. Items available for bid include ship memorabilia such as original passageway lights and portholes, art inspired by Lady Luck, and a luxury vacation package valued at $25,000. The vacation package comprises a three-night stay at the Marriott Pompano Beach from July 22–25, valet parking, daily breakfast and dinner, and the inaugural diving tour of Lady Luck alongside the ship’s inspection team and the Scuba Nation film crew. That experience will be filmed for broadcast on Fox Sun Sports Channel.
The second event, scheduled for July 23, is the planned sinking of the ship to a depth of approximately 120 feet. Once submerged, Lady Luck will become part of Shipwreck Park, an underwater display that already features 16 wrecks and marine-themed art installations, including oversized dice and sculptures of casino-going octopi and sharks. Ticketed entry begins at $75 and includes valet parking, passed hors d’oeuvres, lunch, and an open bar.
“The addition of Lady Luck, decorated with creative artwork, will promote growth of natural marine life within our artificial reef system,” said Greg Harrison, chair of The Shipwreck Park Inc. The project is intended to expand habitat for marine species, enhance diving opportunities, and contribute to the region’s environmental and recreational offerings.
Marriott is coordinating the events and supporting the reef-sinking effort in partnership with local authorities, conservation groups, and diving organizations. The initiative follows established reef-creation practices, including thorough cleaning and preparation of the vessel to ensure environmental safety prior to sinking.
Shipwreck Park continues to grow as a unique destination for divers and snorkelers, combining artistry with marine habitat creation. The addition of Lady Luck is expected to increase visitation, provide new photographic and exploration opportunities, and further promote awareness of reef conservation in the Fort Lauderdale and Pompano Beach area.
