Philadelphia to Bologna: American Airlines Launches New Roundtrip Route

American Airlines will launch a new nonstop roundtrip route between Philadelphia (PHL) and Bologna, Italy (BLQ) this summer. The inaugural flight on June 2 will mark the first direct service connecting Philadelphia with the central-northern region of Italy, making travel between the two cities faster and more convenient.

As the capital of the Emilia-Romagna region, Bologna is celebrated for its culinary traditions and is often regarded as one of the world’s great food destinations. The city is famous for its cured meats, cheeses, and fresh pasta, and has given its name—directly or indirectly—to dishes that are beloved worldwide.

Beyond its food culture, Emilia-Romagna is also known for producing some of the world’s most iconic sports cars, with manufacturers such as Ferrari and Lamborghini located in the region. Bologna itself blends historic charm with modern attractions: it is home to the University of Bologna, one of Europe’s oldest universities, and features notable architecture, vibrant piazzas, and a lively cafe and market scene.

Bologna is also an excellent base for exploring northern Italy. High-speed trains connect the city to major tourist destinations—Florence and Venice are a short ride away, and Milan can be reached in about an hour by train—making Bologna a convenient hub for wider travel in the region.

With the addition of this new service, Philadelphia International Airport becomes the only North American gateway offering direct flights to Bologna, expanding transatlantic options for travelers in the Philadelphia area and beyond.
