Nighttime Alcatraz Cruise: San Francisco Bay After Dark

Perhaps you seek a thrill or simply want a different way to experience Alcatraz Island. The island’s Night Tour offers a distinctive and memorable option for curious visitors.

After daytime visitors leave, Alcatraz Landing (Pier 33) remains open for the final ferry. The Night Tour follows much of the same route as the daytime visit, including access to the cellhouse audio tour, but adds a layer of atmosphere and discovery with a private guide.

During the tour, guides highlight reminders of the island’s escape attempts and point out secluded spots that are hard to spot on a daytime visit. You’ll see prison areas that are not normally reachable on foot during regular hours.

The guided portion leads guests up the steep path to the Cellhouse, with informative stops and anecdotes along the way. Once inside the Cellhouse, visitors can continue exploring independently using the provided audio program.

Night Tours also grant access to locations that are typically restricted during the day, such as hospital areas and certain solitary confinement cells, accompanied by firsthand accounts from former inmates and correctional staff when available.

Specific stops and experiences on the Night Tour are disclosed during the outing to preserve the tour’s element of surprise and ensure each excursion feels fresh. Because of its limited availability and popularity, tickets sell quickly—reservations are strongly recommended, with many visitors booking up to 90 days in advance.
