New Orleans Begins Construction on New Airport Terminal

Visitors to and residents of New Orleans have many reasons to love the Big Easy: the endless parties, blossoms that appear even in winter, rich history, and the city’s vivid personality. The airport, however, has rarely been on that list.

For decades Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport has felt dated, offering only limited shopping and dining options—surprising for a city celebrated for its cuisine. The terminal décor has drawn consistent criticism, recent cosmetic updates for major events aside, and travelers often note unpleasant odors and other facility shortcomings.

Fortunately, the city moved forward with plans for a major upgrade: a new 30-gate terminal designed to bring the airport up to modern standards and accommodate rising passenger demand. The project centers on a 650,000-square-foot North Terminal that will replace the aging A, B, and C concourses. Concourse D will be repurposed for charter operations and airport administrative space, while Transportation Security Administration screening will be consolidated into a single, centralized checkpoint to improve flow and convenience.

The overall project carries an estimated cost of about $1 billion and includes infrastructure improvements such as new exit ramps to I-10 to ease access and reduce congestion around the airport. The development aims not only to modernize the facility but also to create a more welcoming arrival and departure experience with expanded retail and food options, updated interiors, and more efficient passenger processing.

Planners timed the planned opening to align with the city’s tricentennial celebrations, giving New Orleans a refreshed gateway in time for the milestone festivities. The new terminal should help the region better serve both leisure and business travelers, support tourism growth, and reflect the distinctive culture and hospitality visitors expect when they arrive in New Orleans.
