Soaring above the Elbe riverfront in Hamburg in a striking blend of brick and glass, the Elbphilharmonie concert hall accommodates 2,100 people in its main auditorium and includes two smaller performance spaces. Designed by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, the building’s upper glass façade evokes the image of a ship arriving on the river, a visual effect reinforced by the solid brick base that makes the glass volume appear to float above the quay.
Acoustic designer Yasuhisa Toyota implemented advanced sound solutions, including a “white skin” made from roughly 10,000 gypsum-fiber panels that refine and distribute sound across the hall. The orchestra and conductor’s podium are positioned centrally to optimize the listening experience. The NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra will use the venue as its home ensemble.
Beyond its concert spaces, the Elbphilharmonie houses a hotel, a signature restaurant and 45 privately owned apartments, blending cultural, residential and hospitality functions within a single landmark. The building has quickly become an icon on Hamburg’s skyline, celebrated for both its architectural daring and its acoustic ambitions.
