Mauna Kea Resort & Residences: 3 Distinct Areas, Endless Experiences

Many resorts on the Island of Hawai’i cater to multigenerational travel, but Mauna Kea Residences within Mauna Kea Resort take customization and comfort to another level.

The Haupuna Beach Residences consist of 68 residences—ranging from two- to seven-bedroom condos, townhomes, and estates—spanning 670 to 3,500 square feet. Options include private pools, expansive lanais and sweeping vistas of the Kohala Coast. These homes offer ample privacy while providing the conveniences of a luxury hotel: guests enjoy access to amenities at The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort as well as everything at Mauna Kea, including spas, multiple pools, nine dining options, a tennis club, resort beaches and organized activities.

For a more refined multigenerational experience, the Wai’ula’ula area within The Uplands of Mauna Kea Resort is especially appealing. The Ridge Condos (three-bedroom residences offering comfort and value) and The Villas (three- to four-bedroom homes with elevated luxury ideal for entertaining) both feature ocean views. Generous lanais are perfect for sunset cocktails, while master suites with glass and stone baths provide a romantic retreat.

The Villas at Mauna Kea Resort are particularly well suited to larger families or groups of couples traveling together. These two-, three- and five-bedroom enclaves blend indoor and outdoor living, offering cloistered privacy without sacrificing proximity to resort amenities. Thoughtful design and refined décor reflect top-tier luxury, allowing guests to experience a multimillion-dollar residence alongside the services and lifestyle of a premier resort.

Beyond beach outings, golf and hiking, Mauna Kea Resort offers exclusive cultural experiences on property. Every Saturday at 9 a.m., a complimentary 75-minute art tour begins in the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel lobby and highlights a museum-quality collection assembled by hotel founder Laurance S. Rockefeller. The tour showcases Pacific Rim art and spirituality—from Ainu kimono and Thai icons to Maori canoe prows, bronze Indian chests and wooden carvings. Hawaiian culture is prominently featured as well, with exhibits of traditional kapa (pounded bark) cloth, Hawaiian quilts and kii (wooden images).

Children and families can enjoy storytime led by Healani Kimitete-Ah Mow, the resort’s Aloha Ambassador, who introduces young visitors to Hawaiian customs and traditions. Activities include lei making, basic hula lessons and Hawaiian language classes, all designed to share the islands’ history and the importance of preserving Hawaiian culture. At a higher elevation within the Volcano Golf and Country Club subdivision—about 4,000 feet above sea level—Volcano Winery offers tastings and a behind-the-scenes look at winemaking on the island, where a unique balance of rain and sun helps produce nationally recognized wines.
