Lufthansa Finalizes Acquisition of Brussels Airlines: What Changes Next

Starting in 2018, Brussels Airlines will join Lufthansa’s Eurowings Group after its acquisition by Lufthansa. The airline’s 23 long-haul routes and 79 European connections will be operated under the Eurowings brand, integrating Brussels Airlines into a larger network while maintaining its operational identity.

In recent years Brussels Airlines has expanded significantly. Between 2013 and 2015 passenger numbers rose by about 30 percent, reaching roughly 7.5 million travelers. During that period the company invested in fleet efficiency and capacity improvements to support growth on both short- and long-haul services.

Today the carrier employs more than 3,500 people and operates a fleet of 49 aircraft, operating around 300 flights daily and linking Brussels to some 90 destinations. From March the schedule will include five additional weekly flights to Mumbai, India, further extending the airline’s global footprint.

On long-haul services Brussels Airlines offers a modern business class featuring fully lie-flat seats. The upgraded economy cabin includes ergonomic seating and individual touchscreen entertainment systems, reflecting the airline’s focus on passenger comfort and in-flight experience.

Founded in 2002 and owned by SN Airholding, Brussels Airlines has positioned itself as a key European carrier with growing international reach.

“Over the past eight years, our collaboration with Lufthansa has proven its potential to create perspectives and safeguard jobs,” said Viscount Etienne Davignon, chairman of the board at SN Airholding. “More than ever, consolidation in the aviation business is key. Joining the Lufthansa Group allows us to further increase our synergies while keeping our specificities. Operating under the umbrella of Lufthansa will help us to strengthen our competitiveness in a challenging market environment and to develop our long- and short-haul operations. Furthermore, the Lufthansa Group’s strength enables us to expand our presence in Africa by positioning Brussels as the Sub-Saharan Africa hub of the Lufthansa Group.”
