LAN Introduces New Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner Fleet

LAN Airlines has begun operations with its new fleet of Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, the stretched variant of the 787 family that carries about 27% more passengers and 23% more cargo than the 787-8. LAN’s 787-9s are fitted with the unified LATAM Airlines Group cabin interiors and include 30 full-flat seats in Premium Business Class that recline a full 180 degrees for long-haul comfort.

Initially, the new aircraft are serving the Santiago–Lima–Los Angeles (SCL–LIM–LAX) routing, with additional routes scheduled to be added progressively through 2015. Planned expansions include long-haul services to New York (JFK), Easter Island (IPC), Madrid (MAD), Frankfurt (FRA), Auckland (AKL) and Sydney (SYD). LAN is expected to take delivery of six Boeing 787-9 aircraft during the year, supporting its wider network growth.

“We are very happy to receive this next generation aircraft into our fleet, which contributes to the plan of expanding our destination network,” said Ignacio Cueto, CEO of LAN Airlines. “The arrival of the Boeing 787-9 to LAN makes us the only carrier in Latin America to operate both 787 models. It also strengthens our in-flight travel experience, transporting 313 passengers over long distances with the same environmental efficiency.”

The 787-9’s improved capacity and fuel-efficient design help LAN enhance its long-haul service offerings while maintaining environmental performance. The cabin layout emphasizes passenger comfort across classes, with the Business Class full-flat seats aimed at providing restful rest and work space for customers on intercontinental flights. As LAN integrates these aircraft into its schedule, passengers can expect expanded international connectivity and a refreshed onboard product consistent with LATAM’s unified interior standards.
