KLM will launch nonstop service between Amsterdam (AMS) and San José, Costa Rica (SJO) starting at the end of October. The new direct connection responds to growing demand from European travelers seeking convenient access to Costa Rica.
Until now, KLM’s service to San José has required a one-stop itinerary via Panama (PTY), with the Panama–San José segment operated by Copa Airlines under a codeshare agreement. By operating nonstop flights, KLM aims to simplify travel for passengers and strengthen ties between Europe and Costa Rica.
Flights will operate twice weekly on Tuesdays and Fridays. Departures from Amsterdam are scheduled for 15:25, arriving in San José at 20:05 local time. Return flights will depart San José at 22:05 and arrive in Amsterdam at 15:10 the following day, providing convenient connections to KLM’s broader global network.
The new route will be served by KLM’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, configured with 30 World Business Class seats, 45 Economy Comfort seats, and 219 economy seats. The Dreamliner offers a modern cabin environment and long-range efficiency suited for transatlantic operations.
“This new flight will not only facilitate travel to our country, but—thanks to KLM’s global network—will also position Costa Rica as a gateway for tourists from across Europe,” said Luis Guillermo Solis, President of Costa Rica. He emphasized that improved air links are expected to boost the tourism sector and benefit the estimated more than 600,000 people who work in tourism directly and indirectly, as well as the communities that rely on tourism for economic growth.
By providing a direct Amsterdam–San José option, KLM aims to attract leisure and business travelers seeking shorter travel times and seamless connections. The twice-weekly schedule offers flexibility while allowing the airline to assess demand and scale operations as needed.
The nonstop service complements existing codeshare and connecting options, giving travelers a choice between direct flights and itineraries that connect through KLM’s partner hubs. For passengers traveling onward from Amsterdam or San José, KLM’s network can facilitate smooth transfers and coordinated schedules.
Overall, the addition of nonstop Amsterdam–San José flights reflects broader trends in transatlantic travel, where carriers respond to market demand by opening direct routes that improve convenience and reduce travel time. For Costa Rica, expanding direct access to European markets supports tourism growth and economic opportunities across the country.
