KLM has launched Jets, a new app that connects gaming with real-world travel experiences. Travelers who buy tickets earn Wings, the app’s in-game currency, and can receive additional Wings for punctuality. When passengers arrive at their gate on time, Jets uses beacon technology at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport to send a notification offering bonus Wings for being timely.
“By implementing the beacon functionality in Jets we created a unique link between Jets as an entertainment game and the practical challenges of running an airline, like departing on time,” said Tjalling Smit, senior vice president e-commerce, Air France KLM.
Jets launches players into levels inspired by Amsterdam, KLM’s home base. In the game, users pilot a paper plane through the historic city center and over its canals while navigating around cars, trams and boats. The single-player mode lets players unlock missions, collect items and chase high scores. In multiplayer mode, friends can compete by attempting the same mission—the faster or higher-scoring player wins and can immediately share the result on social media.
The app is free to download from the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store. Jets aims to make travel more engaging by rewarding passengers for punctual behavior and turning transit time into playful moments.
