Iraqi Airways Expands Fleet With New Aircraft Routes Updated

Iraqi Airways has taken delivery of a Boeing Next-Generation 737-800, the first of 30 aircraft the carrier ordered in 2008. The jet is configured with 12 first-class seats and 150 economy seats, and it will be central to the airline’s fleet modernization and expansion plans.

H.E. Hadi Al Ameri, Iraq’s minister of transportation, said the 737-800 “will play a key role in helping us modernize our fleet and integrate into the regional and international commercial aviation system.” He added that Boeing has been an important partner in the airline’s growth, and that the Next-Generation 737 is known for reliability and operational efficiency.

The new delivery is part of a larger fleet strategy. Iraqi Airways currently has 39 Boeing aircraft on order, which includes 29 Next-Generation 737-800s and 10 Boeing 787 Dreamliners. Introducing these modern aircraft is expected to improve passenger comfort, increase route flexibility, and boost the airline’s competitiveness on both regional and long-haul services.

Along with updating its hardware, the airline’s focus on modern, fuel-efficient models supports operational efficiency and lower per-seat costs. The combination of 737-800s for short- and medium-haul routes and 787 Dreamliners for longer international services gives Iraqi Airways a more versatile and market-responsive fleet profile.

Industry observers note that the Next-Generation 737-800 is widely used by carriers around the world because of its proven performance, ease of maintenance, and favorable economics for high-frequency regional operations. For Iraqi Airways, adding these aircraft helps establish a consistent fleet type that simplifies pilot training, maintenance procedures, and spare-parts logistics.

Deliveries such as this one also signal the airline’s intent to reassert and expand its connectivity. A modern fleet can open new route opportunities, support higher frequencies on existing services, and improve the overall customer experience through updated cabin amenities and layouts. With a mix of first-class and economy seating on the 737-800, Iraqi Airways can cater to premium travelers while maintaining capacity for cost-conscious passengers.

As the carrier receives additional 737-800s and prepares for the arrival of its 787 Dreamliners, passengers can expect incremental improvements in schedules and service offerings. The modernization program aligns with broader efforts to integrate Iraq’s air transport network more fully with regional and international markets.
