Saudi Arabia is undergoing a major transformation as it repositions itself as a global tourism destination and unveils ambitious new developments and attractions. Among the most talked-about initiatives is NEOM, a special economic zone in northwestern Saudi Arabia that has been described as “a vision of what a new future might look like” and a “city of the future.”
Spanning more than 6 million acres, NEOM divides into three primary regions and focuses activity across 14 strategic sectors. Its location offers several advantages: it sits within a four-hour flight of roughly 40 percent of the world’s population and enjoys a climate that can be up to 50 degrees cooler than much of the Gulf Cooperation Council. The region also carries deep historical significance — it is part of the Land of Prophets and is associated with the story of Moses, who is said to have lived there during a period of exile. Combined with striking natural landscapes, these attributes help make NEOM’s futuristic ambitions feel tangible today.

NEOM’s three flagship regions are designed with distinct purposes:
- Trojena — The Mountains of NEOM: A year-round mountain destination combining natural scenery with developed infrastructure. Trojena will be organized into six development districts, blending outdoor recreation, tourism and residential life.
- Oxagon — A Reimagined Industrial City: Now open, Oxagon is described as a “pioneering cognitive city” focused on advanced manufacturing, technology, sustainable industry and innovative approaches to work and living.
- The Line — A Revolution in Urban Living: Planned as a linear city 170 kilometers long designed to house one million residents, The Line aims to preserve 95 percent of NEOM’s natural environment while eliminating cars, streets and carbon emissions.

NEOM’s plan centers on 14 sectors that will shape its economy, culture and daily life. These sectors highlight a mix of high-tech innovation, sustainability and human-centered design:
- Design and Construction: Creating communities that reflect advanced, sustainable building practices and forward-looking urban design.
- Education: Promoting a hands-on, experiential learning culture that prepares people for emerging industries and collaborative innovation.
- Energy: Committing to develop 100 percent clean energy at scale to power the region sustainably.
- Entertainment and Culture: Leveraging innovative technologies to deliver personalized experiences and immersive cultural offerings.
- Financial Services: Providing inclusive, digital-first financial solutions aimed at universal access and seamless transactions.
- Food: Applying circular design, green energy and breakthrough technologies to build resilient food systems and reduce resource pressures.
- Health, Well-Being and Biotech: Creating an ecosystem that extends beyond traditional healthcare to emphasize preventive care, wellness and biotech advancements.
- Manufacturing: Embracing state-of-the-art production methods, integrated supply chains and research-driven innovation to transform industry.

As NEOM continues to evolve, it will remain a closely watched experiment in large-scale planning, sustainability and technological integration. Its combination of historic setting, natural beauty and forward-leaning design aims to create new models for how cities, industries and communities coexist — and to redefine what a modern destination can be.
