How Locals Cross the Huangpu River in Shanghai: A Smart Guide

Bridges and ferries span the Huangpu River between Shanghai’s two banks, but for a more memorable crossing consider the Bund Sightseeing Tunnel. Designed for visitors who appreciate a touch of whimsy, this half-mile ride is more than a simple transit—it’s a short multimedia journey featuring lights, music and visual effects.

Passengers descend an escalator into a modern lobby decorated with plants and colored lighting. An attendant in a red uniform guides riders into a sleek electric capsule. As the capsule glides through the tunnel, a ceiling of twinkling lights and rotating neon arcs—yellow, blue, green and bright pink—creates a vivid visual panorama. A six-channel surround sound system complements the display with a soundtrack that shifts from atmospheric, otherworldly tones to grand, dramatic motifs and even the sounds of rushing water and bubbling streams.

Projected imagery enhances the experience: schools of fish appear to swim across the tunnel walls, and at moments inflatable figures seem to dance and wave. The combination of synchronized light, sound and projected animation turns the short crossing into an immersive spectacle.

After three to five minutes and a final passage through a simulated “meteor shower,” passengers emerge on the opposite bank. The service connects Chenyi Square in Puxi with the area near the Oriental Pearl TV and Radio Tower in Pudong. Tickets are priced for visitors and provide a convenient—and entertaining—alternative to the ordinary river crossing.
