Hedges Family Estate Washington: Visiting Guide & Wine Tasting Tips

Tom Hedges stumbled into winemaking almost by accident. In the 1980s he worked marketing American wines in Taiwan, and later sold a Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blend to the Swedish government. Those experiences, combined with his wife Anne-Marie’s French roots and their shared interest in viticulture, inspired them to make their own wine. They purchased 50 acres on the southwest slope of Red Mountain in Washington State—land that had never been planted—and began building what is now Hedges Family Estate. Over the years the property has grown to 125 acres, and the estate this year celebrates its 25th vintage. Today the operation remains a true family venture: daughter Sarah serves as winemaker, son Christophe is general manager and director of sales, and the Hedges couple continue to guide the vision.

Hedges Family Estate focuses on red varieties well suited to the warm, well-drained soils of Red Mountain. The vineyards are planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with additional blocks of Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. Viticulture at Hedges emphasizes sustainable and regenerative practices: roughly 40 percent of the estate is already certified biodynamic, and the remaining acres are in the process of conversion. The family’s farming-first philosophy underscores their belief that great wine starts in the vineyard; they aim to capture the site’s terroir so each wine conveys the distinctive character of the land where its grapes were grown.

The estate’s flagship bottling, Hedges Family Estate Red Mountain, blends all five estate varieties into a wine that reflects the vineyard’s depth and diversity. The 2012 release, currently available, is built on 60 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and shows a deep color, an expressive, forward nose and a lively palate that clearly reveals its varietal core. Structured yet accessible, this wine offers the balance and tannic framework to age gracefully over time.

Hedges also offers older vintages of the Family Estate Red Mountain that illustrate the aging potential of their wines. The 2007 vintage, for example, is based on 55.6 percent Merlot and, at eight years of age, displays an elegant profile with aromas that remain fresh and a finish that still carries a touch of tannin. In some markets collectors can find even older releases, providing a useful comparison of how Red Mountain fruit evolves under careful cellar management.

At the top of the portfolio sits La Haute Cuvée, the estate’s limited-production wine. The 2012 La Haute Cuvée, offered in magnum format, is made from 100 percent biodynamically farmed Cabernet Sauvignon. It delivers concentrated ripe fruit, expressive varietal character and a rich, layered texture that positions it as the winery’s flagship prestige bottling.

Another notable aspect of Hedges wines is their moderate alcohol levels, which typically range from 13.4 to 14 percent. This restraint helps preserve freshness and balance and allows subtler aromatic and flavor elements to shine—qualities that can be muted in higher-alcohol wines.

Over its quarter-century of winemaking on Red Mountain, Hedges Family Estate has combined careful viticulture, biodynamic practices and family stewardship to create wines that emphasize place, balance and longevity. From everyday enjoyment to cellar-worthy releases, the range reflects the estate’s commitment to farming first and to producing wines that genuinely express the character of their home vineyards.
