GT Readers’ Choice Awards 2015: Winners Revealed

Each year the travel industry’s top performers gather recognition in the GT Tested Reader Survey awards, and 2015 is no exception. Marking the 12th anniversary of the reader-voted survey and the fifth year the ceremony was held at The Peninsula Beverly Hills, this year’s winners reflect decades of service, innovation and guest satisfaction as chosen by Global Traveler readers.

Readers cast their votes across airlines, hotels, destinations and travel services worldwide. The 2015 GT Tested Reader Survey winners include both long-standing champions and fresh entrants who earned readers’ approval in highly competitive categories. Below is a concise, polished summary of the awards and notable results, presented in the original survey structure.

Airline honors include Singapore Airlines reclaiming Best Overall Airline in the World, while the Airbus A380 makes its debut as Best Aircraft Type. Cathay Pacific Airways and Virgin America appear as newcomers in the first-class categories, winning Best Airline for International First Class and Best Airline for Domestic First Class, respectively. China Airlines receives recognition for Best Flight Attendant Uniforms and Best Business-Class Seat Design with its new cabin styling, and Etihad Airways takes Best First-Class Seat Design. EVA AIR’s new Houston–Taipei route earns Best Airline for New Service Launch, and the carrier also wins Best Airport Staff/Gate Agents. Hawaiian Airlines is named Best Frequent-Flyer Elite-Level Program for its HawaiianMiles Pualani Platinum membership.

Regional winners include Delta Air Lines as Best Airline in North America and a tie between airberlin and TAP Portugal for Best Airline in Europe, with airberlin also earning Best Trans-Atlantic Airline. Aeroflot wins Best Airline in Eastern Europe, Air Tahiti Nui is Best Airline in the South Pacific, and Etihad Airways is Best Airline in the Middle East. American Airlines’ Admirals Club is honored as Best Airport Lounges.

Hotel categories are led by The Ritz-Carlton, which dominates with Best International Hotel Chain, Best Domestic Hotel Chain and Best Hotel Website. The Ritz-Carlton Rewards Credit Card from Chase also tops the affinity credit card redemptions list. Other hotel winners include Crowne Plaza Singapore Changi Airport as Best Airport Hotel; Hilton HHonors as Best Frequent-Stay Bonus Program; Grand Hyatt as Best Hotel Chain in Asia; and Lotte Hotel Seoul as Best MICE Hotel and Best Hotel in South Korea. Seoul itself is named Best MICE City for the first time.

Beyond hotels and airlines, winners from travel providers and card issuers include Porsche for Best Overseas Delivery Program, T-Mobile as Best Wireless Service in the World, and a range of credit cards recognized for benefits, promotions and redemptions: Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express, Delta SkyMiles Credit Card from American Express and Celebrity Cruises Visa Signature Credit Card.

Anniversary-themed highlights appear throughout the awards. Second-year winners—symbolized traditionally by cotton—show consistency and customer focus, with JetBlue.com taking Best Airline Website and Singapore Airlines again earning Best Airline for Business Class. Repeat winners in regional airline categories and airport dining show sustained excellence. Third-, fourth- and fifth-year champions are noted for their long-term leadership in categories such as frequent-flyer programs, credit cards and hotel brands. oneworld repeats as Best Airline Alliance for the sixth straight year, and Alitalia is recognized as Best Airline Cuisine for the same period. Boingo Wireless and The Peninsula Beverly Hills also appear among multi-year winners.

Nine-time winners—celebrating the willow/wicker milestone—include EL AL Israel Airlines for Best Airline for Security, Dubai Duty Free for Best Duty-Free Shops, and The Address Downtown Dubai as Best Individual Hotel in the World. Longstanding leaders also include Incheon International Airport as Best Overall Airport in the World (10 years) and IHG Rewards Club as Best Hotel Rewards Program in the World (11 years).

The 12th-anniversary group—winners since the survey began—embodies consistency and quality. Asiana Airlines is again acclaimed for Best Airline for Onboard Service and Best Airline for Flight Attendants. United MileagePlus is honored as Best Overall Frequent-Flyer Program for the 12th consecutive year, South African Airways remains Best Airline in Africa, Chicago O’Hare is Best Airport in North America, and Sheraton Hotels & Resorts is Best Hotel Chain in Latin America.

Wines on the Wing 2015
Global Traveler’s annual Wines on the Wing airline wine competition, judged by a panel of 16 wine professionals, revealed strong contenders among airline wine programs. All Nippon Airways received multiple awards, including Best International Business-Class Wines on the Wing, Best International First-Class Wines on the Wing, Best International First-Class Champagne and Best International First-Class White Wine (tied with American Airlines). Hainan Airlines won Best Business-Class Champagne. Fiji Airways, British Airways, American Airlines, oneworld, Delta Air Lines and Virgin America also received distinctions across sparkling, red and white categories in both international and North American divisions.

These 2015 winners represent outstanding service, memorable experiences and continuous improvement across the travel industry. Their recognition in the GT Tested Reader Survey reflects the votes and opinions of engaged travelers worldwide—cheers to many more successful years ahead.

The Voting Process
Open-ended ballots were available in subscriber copies of Global Traveler and online from Jan. 1 to Aug. 31, 2015, with additional distribution via direct mail and email. Ballots were disqualified if fewer than half the fields were completed. More than 22,000 qualified ballots were returned. Employees of FX Express Publications, Inc., and affiliated travel industry members were not eligible to vote.
